Things your kids will never experience

Postby Bushido Hacks » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:14 am

Clearly there is a list about this topic somewhere else online, but for a better opinion why not ask the audience.

To start off, here's a list of things kids may never experience, or have not out of the ignorance of other people not wanting to show them how to do it.

* Cursive Writing (tip: parents should teach their children this if their school doesn't!)
* Cassette Tapes
* Dial-up Modems
* Scrambled cable porn (guilty!)
* Landline Telephones
* Shortwave Radio (its still there, just not as good; On top of that, their is no more BBC World Service unless you have Satelite Radio, live in the UK, or a local station (NPR) airs it at night)
* VHS tapes (Unless you are smart and still have one to show the kids the unedited version of Star Wars.)
* Phone booths (becoming an endangered species!)
* Privacy (less of it, no mater who you vote for.)

Welcome to the new figment! (tosses traditional gummi brick)

And well, even though I may have over a dozen psychiatric diagnoses, I'm not crazy enough to BREED! But I'd happily spare any such hypothetical spawn the curse of cursive. Always hated it, can barely read it, can write it only slowly, and I'm the oldest fogey in the forum. Even older than Aaron. Sad, huh? ;)

Printing is superior, typing even better. If you wanna write fancy, there's loads of wonderful styles you can learn without making everything look like a lower-case 'l'.

i posted about this once.

i used to volunteer teaching elementary schoolers art. we were going to make a comic book, so i wanted them to design characters. i had to explain the concept of a secret identity to them and i used the example "you know how Clark Kent goes into a phonebooth and comes out as Superman?" to which the kids replied "what's a phonebooth?"
and then i felt old.

added to the list are
*rotary* phones
vinyl records
a short line at the airport
8 bit video games

and such. i assume we're only talking about the things *we* experienced as children that our children will not have. sometimes i think about how my grandparents lived in a world where electricity and automobiles were only beginning and there was no television so everyone gathered around the radio to listen to dramas.
my own dad tells me sometimes about when he was a kid he'd go to the movie theater and get to watch cartoons and a three stooges short and a news reel and a main feature! that's something i'll never get to experience.

william, if you mean short lines at the airport, you probably remember not having to take off your shoes at the airport.

Other things they will never experience:
* AOL
* Not getting sick because someone's New Age parents didn't have some philosophical excuse not to get immunized. (i.e. "It's against my religion" (unlikely), "Vaccines cause autism" (No, they don't!), "It will ruin the Xi and the Feng Shui in my house". (WTF?))
* Rabbit ears on TV
* Kazzaa
* One cable news network
* Less than 100 cable channels
* CRT computer monitors and TV screens

lordy those anti-immunization people make me SO ANGRY. i can only hope that this idea fades from existence. when was the last time you met someone whose legs had been crippled by polio? oh yeah NEVER because vaccines WORK!

and hey woah now, i only have about 20 cable channels at home. of course, i COULD buy more if i so chose, but i do not. this is because if i did, i would do nothing but watch the Cartoon Network, Sci-fi and Turner Classic Movies ALL DAY LONG.

Both me and my current almost-girlfriend love 8-bit video games along with 16-bit stuff (I assume the snes was 16-bit), and if we ever have one together you can bet your ass my kid will be raised on Mario.

here's the real biggy:

A 'FIRST' COMPUTER.

mine was a vic20 btw. How many people under 20 *now* can even remember?

I'm startin' to wonder if Saturday Morning Cartoons might hit the list too.

Oh, and how about riding a bike without a helmet?

unless Nickelodeon pulls its head out of its ass soon, our children will never experience another great age of great cartoons like we did in the nintees. same goes with Disney. i used to LOVE Gummi Bears and even Winnie the Pooh; but now its all hackneyed tween High School Musical 78 Zach "antichrist" Effron bullshit. what ever happened to great cartoons that were just targeted towards kids? seriously, i am sick of this. its things like this that make me NOT miss watching TV almost every day.

The next generation won't spend their time checking back here, twice a week, trying to figure out what Stiletta wants from Sera, or if Kelton and Tess have a thing going on, or if Sera will leave Crestfallen.

Good. Times.

They deserve a lot of blame, but personally my antipathy goes all the way back to Menudo.

Yes, someday all the classic works of the great Aaron Alexovich will be required reading for all schoolkids, and the kids will bitch and moan about it, and we'll bellyache about kids these days and their lack of taste.... :wink:
