Boozy thread?

Postby Scissorhands » Sun Jul 11, 2010 9:59 am

What I want to start here is not a thread for saying things like "I drank this much!!!!", but for serious discussions about fine wines and ales and other tipsy things.

Today I have a bottle of Wood's Parish bitter, it has a slightly banana-ish scent and a fine taste.

I like trying out new beers. I can't say I drink a lot. But when I do I like to choose my stuff carefully. Cause it's fun. I think my current favorits are.

Kilkenny
Image

I obviously started to drink this cause of the funny name. But it's the dark ale I feel like I can drink in diffrent situations. Unlike Guinnes that feels like eating a whole meal. Fun fact, this was the first beer I bought at the liquor store "legally".

Corona
Image

This is the ultimate relax beer for me. And also "the girly beer" that people keeps telling me. But few things are better than sitting at the sun with a cold Corona with lime in it.

Kirin

This beer was very common in Japan. And perhaps I was just brainwashed by how awesome Japan was when I was there. But needless to say, I have some really found memories with this beer in Japan. And it taste good too.

Staropramen
Image

Staropramen you can find everywhere around here. So when you had it once it's easy to take another next time you go out.

Aaaand Newcastle

This stuff is almost like candy. A girl I liked recommended this one for me. I lost the girl but gained a beer. ;)

I don't drink, but I am fascinated with beverages including beer (root beer being my favorite beverage). From what I have heard from my dad, Shipyard Ale is some of the best stuff you can get in the states. Unfortunately, you can only find it in Maine and I think New Hampshire as well (and possibly Boston Massachusetts). I don't think he's ever tried Castle Brown Ale and he HATES Corona (he says it tastes like, well, piss). Slinker, just out of curiosity, would you consider Castle Brown Ale a good beer for a first time drinker? I'm curious because I plan to get smashed on my 21st birthday at the local casino (or more specifically, my FRIENDS plan to get ME smashed by buying me drinks).

Tsingtao makes a good beer...
Red Stripe is pretty good too...
Asahi was kind of dry, but was good with food...
Michelob was ok, since it was my first ever...
and Rolling Rock was nice enough.
Fosters was kinda bitter and a little watery, so I recommend skipping it.

I donnu if I would like get "smashed" with only it, since you would probably need a lot of it. You would probably want stronger stuff if thats your plan. But yeah, it's a good and tastfull beer, so that's good start for sure. :)

And stop listen to your silly dad, try em and make up your own mind! ;)

I gave up drinking, so I don't have much to contribute to this thread...

I had Asahi a time ago. I didn't expect that dry taste first, but I appricated it after a few attempts. :)
Is it a rather common beer in da USA?

As far as Japanese imports are concerned, all that's available is Kirin or Asahi.
Most American super markets have a decent beer selection, what with the whole microbrewery explosion. If you want uncommon European or Asian imports, you have to check specialty stores like World Market.
World Market is this store that sells nothing but imported goods and memorabilia.
African Furniture, Specialty Cooking Tools, Imported Beers and Wines, South American Coffee and snack foods from all over. It was basically the only place you could get Pocky until Anime got really popular and FYE (a DVD, music, and video games retailer) starting stocking it alongside Calpis and other such things.
World Market usually charges more, but it's worth it for the selection.
You can even buy Japanese Mayo.
Their selection is predominantly Belgian, but there's beer from all over.

Never understood this idea...

I like drinking to relax a bit. Though I haven't really drank anything since probably New Years...
I despise hangovers.

My fave drink is sake.
Completely different kind of feeling than wheat based products.
One reason I like sake is that it comes on hard and then goes away quick.
The first time I had sake was like "I could drink this stuff every day!" That was when I had barely ever drank anything.

Takara Sierra Cold Sake
(FAVE! drink ever)

Ozeki Sake Dry

Gekkeikan

None of these are over $8 a bottle. So no commitment like buying a bottle of liquor.

I don't care too much for beer. Heineken and Killian's Irish Red are okay.
Leinenkugels Sunset Wheat is good after having a good buzz. It takes fruity.

I like Sake, but I haven't really taking any favorits among it. When it comes to taking quick "shoots" I'm a lot less picky. I mean when you come to that you really are planning to get drunk in my case. I usally go with Jägermeister.

Or some sort of Tequila if I'm feeling extra fancy. ^^

And it's also intresting to see how the Japanish stuff is favord among us.

Only alcoholic beverages I've found enjoyable (as opposed to "nasty" in every other case) were Hofbräu and Guinness, though I've never had enough interest to explore all that much.

That Hofbräuhaus in Munich is pretty freakin' impressive tho. Like 4 or 5 stories & the size of a smallish basketball stadium. Totally overrun w/ tourists tho, natch ;)

@Slinker
I guess I like it because it gets me drunk fairly quickly, but it doesn't keep me drunk all night like other alcohols do. I can't stand being drunk when I would like to sober up quick. I also despise hangovers. A little bottle of that Takara Sierra and I've got my feel good for a couple hours and then I'm back to sober with very minor after effects.
Sake also affects me differently than other alcohols. I'm always happy on sake. Others tend to exacerbate bad feelings.

Yes, I get that. But I don't see the point in doing that. Then it really sounds like its "All abot being drunk". I dont mind being drunk. But I prefer the "just a few" beers state when you're mostly just a bit dizzy. That would be hard to achieve with 30% or higher sake.

Sake never gets near 30%. A high content sake is 12%. Unfiltered and undiluted can reach 20% at most but most commercial is diluted down to 15% and under. Typically I drink around a 7% - 12%.

Perhaps you are thinking of shochu? It has 25-35%. It's more of a vodka type that I don't care too much for.

I've had Asahi beer as well, but it has been too long for me to remember.

And a good cheap Arbor Mist Blackberry Merlot is always welcome in our house. ;)

Oh, nevermind. I don't think I had sake then, cause it was kinda strong. That was my memory of it back then at least. That night was kinda insane............ :S

But 7%-12%? I Think I know why it goes away fast. :)
