Man o' art

From my point of view, and a few others share this unique study research. But, people that grow up with Deviantart, or go under the term "Deviant artists" seem to be at war with people that grow up with Newgrounds, that go under the term "Newgrounders".

It could be the other way around, seeing how Newgrounders tend to be filled with a lot o' hate. Then again, the main population of Deviantart tend to be the type that spends all day texting friends about their new picture that took a few shades of color, mixed with a cat t- Nevermind, that's just my Newgrounder-genes coming out.

I want to know what you think, from what I've seen the art content seems to be a bit like this...

DEVIANT ARTISTS: Smug, social-types. Advertises whatever they have the fastest they can, with whatever means they can possibly latch onto. Craves attention.

NEWGROUNDERS: Trolls, normally anti-social. Releases a few selected places, maybe makes a note of it publicly. Barely cares about general attention.

Now for the site directly...

DEVIANTART: I find the layout very confusing, the '~' makes me wonder sometimes about what is going on. Seem like a complicated version of facebook for the most part, possibly myspace, WHATEVER.

NEWGROUNDS: The tabs help a ton, seems very well organized. The colors aren't dynamic, but aren't forgettable.

So there you go, I might be bias on this study. But I often have deviant artists agree that some of the other artists are much to smug for their own good, and give the site a bad reputation. Likewise with Newgrounds, given the trolls that draw man-parts all day, and posting horrid reviews on other man-parts.

GIVE FEEDBACK ON THIS TOPIC, I CRAVE ATTENTION FOR IT.

i only recently joined DevianArt and have never actually joined Newgrounds, though i have been familiar with both for quite some time.

frankly, before i had the Deviant account, i would look at art work simply by chance most of the time. i would perform a google search for images and a deviant image would pop up in the mix. if i thought it warranted a closer look, i would, and if the artist seemed quite good, i might delve into their gallery.

with newgrounds, i would mainly find stuff on there because somebody else pointed me to it. and then it was mostly for animations or games. someone would email a link telling me i had to check something out, and i would, and there, too, if i was properly impressed i would see what else that person had created on newgrounds.

as a member of deviantart, i'm not really into it for the social-ness. i totally understand what you mean, though. there are people with a blog website who are total whores about their posts and some people are like that about their art, too (i left YOU a comment so you should leave ME a comment! waaaah!). like blog posts, for deviant art posts, i only comment when i feel i have something relevant to say about it or am so thoroughly impressed that i have to tell that person as much. and since this is my own approach to commenting, when *I* receive a comment it makes me feel extra special that someone liked my art-thing so much that they actually felt the need to tell me about it.

but when it come down to deviant art vs newgrounds, i dont think i can really formulate a valid opinion on it because i dont really look at those sites or use them in that way. i dont read the forums or many of other people's comments or anything (except for the ones directed at me). but yeah, when *I* post a new art thingie, i'll mention it on my Twitter. i *want* people to look at my art-thing. it's WHY i posted it online. if i didn't want anyone to see it, i wouldn't have uploaded it, would i? can't that be said of ANYTHING anyone posts to the internet? i mean, if you didn't want anyone to see it, you wouldnt put it where millions of people might stumble upon it, would you? i dunno.... i lost my track of thought there.

The reason google doesn't reach Newgrounds as much, is because their site isn't fully supported by Google Ads. Youtube, Wikipedia, and a lot more websites (such as Deviantart) are. Google Ads run from Google, so it would only be simple logic to put two and two together to see that Google will always make the one with the most Google Ads the first place.

That's why Newgrounds isn't fully known. But another point is for the actual art on Newgrounds, yes some of it IS for flash games. But that is only because a large part of Newgrounds began on flash games, and audio. They recently added a category for 'art games' which is a absolutely amazing idea, and I've been waiting for such a thing for quite some time. You can find it at http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/artgames.html .

There IS art on Newgrounds, and there is also art games, also flash video which is a great way to show art in motion. Deviantart also has video (I... Think) but last I checked it's choppy as hell.

From my point of view, I can see Newgrounds as being better, and easier to use. The community IS helpful (A selected few) if you're willing to beat off the trolls with a stick. The resources they have I think are on a completely next level to Deviantart, while deviantart seems to have a more passionate community, less trolls.

This is the first I've heard of newgrounds, akshly. I do find dA's interface kind of obnoxious, but at the same time I *already* get pretty annoyed with the trollage that happens *there*...

For Newgrounds, just stay away from the forums, and you'll be fine. Or rather, the main topic thread.

Like I said, Newgrounds should be known as much as Deviantart. But for that to happen, they'll need to sell out A LOT. It's sad, really :c
