voting is over and i didnt win. awwww. the picture titled "the greasers" won the most artistic prize with 16 votes and i came in close second with 15. oh well. that greasers one really was pretty sweet what with that hot rod in it and all.

i may not have won the last contest, but i remain undeterred! April's theme is "Gargoyles Down Under" and I immediately thought about Australian Aboriginals and turning that into a Gargoyle. This is my very first, from scratch Gargoyle character design (re: non-canon) ever, and she's pretty okay for a first go. the hard part was designing the horns. anyway! one of the things i associate with Australian Aboriginals is the bullroarer, since i used to read Uncanny X-men during that stint when everyone thought the X-men were dead and they were living in Australia and there was this silent Aborigine character they named Gateway because he could teleport the X-men en masse with the use of a bullroarer. so that's why. besides ceremonies, bullroarers were used to communicate over long distances, so i thought of putting her up on a cliff to use it and when i went about researching that, i found these pretty photos of a formation called The Three Sisters

so i drew that in. i drew the rocks by hand with pencil and inks (thanks George Perez for the tips!) and made the background on the computer in Adobe Photoshop, with rough inks as guides, which were erased.
this image uses my MOST LAYERS to date! i think i'm getting the hang of them!

new hampshire USED to have one, but it fell down. RIP Old Man of the Mountain.

also, i had a shocking revelation yesterday: i mistakenly made this a DAYTIME image, when gargoyles are supposed to be STONE during the day, and alive at night! EPIC FAIL!! unfortunately, i already disposed of the layer file so i can't fix it easily. DOUBLE FAIL!

hmmm, it is kinda blue up there.

but axshly, in a really remote area with clear starry skies & time to let your eyes adjust, it's amazing how bright things start to look. I 'member nights like that out camping when I lived in the 'Zona. (y'know, the Ari one.)

wait .... AFTER? i got the news maybe 5 years after i had the quarter ...... am i really that out of touch? :oops:

& yeah, for some reason i tend to think in that no-prize mode a lot ...... i've heard the main use of human reasoning ability is justifying things after the fact :shock:

their june 2009 topic will be "i wish they all could be california goyles," which had me stumped for a while. trying to encapsulate "california" i was high and dry for ideas. then after some googling around (which sounds kind of dirty, admittedly) i happened across Miss California (not to be confused with Miss California USA, apparently) Jackie Geist who was in the top 10 for Miss America. i decided to draw her if she were a gargoyle character and this is what i came up with. i got reference photos here:

i decided on green skin because miss geist has a weird green colour for her eyes so i went with that. i used the same lip tone for the wing lining colour because it both contrasts AND compliments. sorry about the "background." i would have left it blank, but i really needed something for the white dress to stand out against.
yeah, her wings are a little lop-sided-ish if you really look at them, so don't. but overall i's likeses it.
