Not necessarily related, but I've always kind of admired my native language for all of it's lovely little short cuts.
Why worry about die, der, and zie or la and le or el, la, las, los when you can just use "the". For everything.
The door, the doors, the cows, the hens, the hen.
Then there's "a" and "an", instead of un, una, unas and the like.

Of course, you can also turn any noun into a verb!
You can BOX a BOX into a BOX by boxing the box!
You can Shovel Shovels with a Shovel!
You can cow a Cow!
You can turn around and take a turn, or make a turn for the worst!
You can motion a motion to carry an action! And then action a motion to carry!

I can see how that can be confusing.
Like with most languages, I suppose the best way to get the hang of it is to talk with native speakers...
Or Pimsleur, whatevs..

Buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo!

Could anything like that possibly be a proper sentence in any other language?

Uh.... Buffalo ... What?! How is that a sentence in English?!

Most people can't even tell I'm not a native speaker, but... I'm lost on this one.

Well, I pronounce Buffalo etc. to be officially ridiculous. :P

And now Maddie shows up.

And here is "break your stupid heart" writ very very large for Sera.

Maddie has gone off and become a journalist. While Serenity is entertaining thoughts of getting to know the adult version of someone she had a crush on way back in the way back, perhaps as a friend and perhaps as more than a friend, Maddie is entertaining thoughts of a giant scoop and an exclusive interview with a celebrity witch.

And Serenity is so very inexperienced in these matters and will become excited and build it up in her mind as a possible way to grasp ever-elusive happiness, only to come crashing down in horrible disappointment.

Anger and frustration led to the 'bus incident'. A few years earlier another emotional trauma led to the freezing of several cubic miles of lake Michigan. Whatever will rage and betrayal at having her emotions toyed with by a reporter lead to? Especially now that the clock is ticking and there seems to be more magical power around? Any powerful, uncontrolled spellcast resulting from emotional distress is likely to be dramatically and unexpectedly more powerful just now, I think.

Hmmm. I wonder whether Skarsdayle owns the magazine, or otherwise has a large influence there?

i kinda wonder if serenity has never been kissed? she seems kinda scared of finding out what love/lust/attraction are, especially her own. if so, i wonder if there will be sera/maddy smoochies before this issue closes or if it will all be hopeful thinking on sera's part. it's called "break your stupid heart" so i am not anticipating some kind of happy ending here, but i'm thinking that any sort of of smoochies/romance for sera, even if it ends in heart ache, will be positive for her in the long run.

Two things are required to kiss Sera.

Her consent, and courage.

They are the same two things required to kiss anyone, really, but in her case I think both may be more problematic than they are for most people.

She's painfully shy, which goes to the 'consent' thing, and she's mind-bendingly powerful and a little unstable, which requires either a lot more courage than most people have, or a lot more foolishness.

Of course, the foolish also sometimes think they can do without consent. In Sera's case, their punishment might be both immediate and very entertaining.

Each of us hopes, I think, never to be kissed by someone who doesn't mean it. That's normal. Serenity, because she is shy, awkward, and has her own sexual identity in question, probably finds this to be even more true of herself than it is for most.

true. it would be awful if sera "allowed" herself to be kissed by maddie, only to have some ulterior motive behind it rather than true feelings.

i know it's lame, but i just really, really want sera to wind up happy. i know she's a fictitious character and all, but i feel a little sad for her sometimes and protective of her. most fictional characters i just wait to see where the story will take them, but for for sera i am hopeful she ends up happy.
