Worst band you've ever heard.

Since I'm in a particularly caustic mood, I felt like making this topic. The title says it all, just name the worst band you've ever heard, and why.

For me, it has to be The Mars Volta. Usually I can respect opinions, and I understand that people may like what I don't, but everything this band has produced is such overblown, pretentious, arrogant crap that I can't understand why anyone would like this band. They literally commit assault whenever they release a new album.

Let me expand on that. The fact of the matter is, they've never produced music. The vast majority of their 'tracks' are a random assortment of noise, meant to sound cool. They end up simply sounding like someone vomiting during a "Sounds of the Ocean" CD. Any singing that occurs on their part is most likely accidental, and undeniably terrible because of the lead singers ability to simulate the sound of a cat dying. Or being raped, I haven't quite decided which.

While waiting for Chemlab to take the stage in Boston this weird art-band came on and it was so bad that everyone in the room was struck dumb, we all wanted desperately to leave but all felt like that would just be too rude, and were rooted to the spot trying to weather the storm for about 3 songs before someone finally just turned around and walked out, and from then on the room just slowly emptied (I headed to the bathroom and listened to my CD player).
I don't remember the name of the band but the lead singer started throwing roses and lightsticks out in the middle of one of the "songs", ech.

Hey Sig, you totally sound like a music snob. Which is fine. I like music snobs sometimes. You might not be one as well.

Anyway, lesse...I had a real big hate-on for the Darkness for a while. But I don't care anymore. Umm, hmm, I just avoid bad music nowadays. And plus, I'm not into music in a technical sense so I can't really judge stuff on that at all. I'm not sure how music can be "pretentious", to be honest. I'd kind of like to know, but doubt it will ever be explained to me. Like are there certain elements you can add to make it pretentious? Like when you're writing and use big words you don't understand the context for, can music be done that way as well?

Eh, I've never considered myself a music snob, though I take no offense at the point made. I'm just very opinionated as to what I like and hate, and have taken it upon myself to listen to most music I hear very critically.

As for the pretentious question, I believe any band or artist that tries to sound smarter through lyrics or actual music then they really are can be considered pretentious. You'll notice that most bands that music geeks like sound awful, but they 'experiment' so much with 'different' sounds(note: slam haphazardly on their instruments rather than try to play them) that stupid people tend to feel that they're smarter than they really are by listening to said crap.

That actually makes them seem sound cooler. And seems untrue.

Maybe we should try and zero in on what makes a band "bad".
As I see it, there's multiple categories:
-Music
-Performance ability
-Performance style
-Lyrics
-The Vazquez Effect: to what extent are they overplayed, overexposed, making it impossible to escape hearing them? How easy is it to just turn them off if you don't like what you hear?
-"originality" or lack thereof.
-Torture potential: how easy would it be to use their music, unedited, for psychological torture of anybody, not just you?

In the end the last is the only one that really counts, but all the others are what people seem to complain about the most, so they should be considered when trying to figure it out.

whatever, music is subjective anyway.

Ok, not 'literally'.

also, if you're going to bitch about a band sucking or rocking, its just good form to provide a link to a sample somewhere so others can get some idea as to what you're talking about.

The band from the Boston Chemlab show turns out to be One Of Us. Myspace is here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... ID=4429495
imagine coming for Vera Blue and Latex and finding this. Ech. :x
