Saw Alice in Wonderland last night.

It is a good movie and I enjoyed it but...
It was... odd. Not in an Alice sort of odd though.
It felt more like a different movie using Alice characters.

Everyone did a pretty good job acting. Script was good.
Cracked out March Hare was awesome. White Queen I would like to have seen more of. She felt as if she were hiding something, dramatically overdoing the prim and proper as if she would just like to drop the act.

Overall it just all felt... hollow.
It is one of those current crop of zombie movies I think, like Avatar.
Those movies that have all the makings of a great movie. They just lack the soul to bring them to life.
Everything was one rails. There was not much threat of her not doing anything as she was supposed to. Oh and the 'prophecy' stuff... Pre-determination in Wonderland? That should be blasphemy.

This.
Through the whole thing, I was thinking, "Man, this is like American McGee's, just not as good..."

I rather liked it, as a whole. I left the theatre quite satisfied.

But the story was shoddy, the characters were transparent, and it kind of rode this fence between creepy and sugary, and it just couldn't make up its mind.

I ADORED her red/black dress when she was parading about as "Um".
Absolutely gorgeous, I'd wear it in a heartbeat. ;)

I was thinking the exact same thing. It was as if Tim Burton wanted to make it like American McGee, but was too afraid to "go there". But that's just me.

SHUTTER ISLAND
predictable and a disappointment. i was expecting something more creepy and suspenseful, and instead got a totally text book film. after 10 minutes in, i saw the movie as going one of two ways and was completely right. i dont want to say too much because i dont want to spoil it for others who maybe interested.

"meetoo" on Alice, more or less.... I enjoyed it, there was plenty to like, but it wasn't quite up to Burton's usual standards.

ALSO, finally saw Speed Racer on DVD. It's so nice to see that the Wachowskis finally found something they could handle.

It's been YEARS (i mean DECADES [like THREE of them]) since I saw the show, but a lot of it did refresh some of those old memories nicely. Thought John Goodman did well as Pops, and of course Christina Ricci's Trixie was more than perfect. (btw, did she say 'cool beans!' so much in the series? can't remember....) Lots of it was pretty successful at seeming "cartoonish", though that unfortunately made the *less* successful parts stick out oddly.

The racing parts struck me as *remarkably* TRON-like, which was kind of deja-vooey when I went to Alice and saw the sequel trailer for that...!

I recently watched the Wrestler (again) and realized that it sucked.
It was an outrageously sad story.
Here's a podcast that summarizes my opinions

You might need to skip ahead on this to get to the right bit.

INVADERS FROM MARS!
an old black and white sci-fi flick from 1953. just coz.
it's pretty much everything you expect from a sci-fi film of that era. it smacked of Body Snatchers a tad, but more like It Conquered the World (and if youve seen either of those, then you are my hero).
complete with goofy alien costumes, ray guns from space that can do anything (because theyre from SPACE), lots of army stock footage, and TWO endings: the USA and UK versions, so it all may or may have been a dream, depending on which one you watch.

i like 1950s black and white sci-fi because theyre so much fun :)

I felt that the movie was better than the comic book, if only for how they treated Katie...
