I haven't seen Speed Racer yet, and I'm pretty hesitant to..
I'm a really big Speed Racer fan, and there are very important
parts that they have completely ruined with making this movie...
Such as: the Mach 6. What the hell? The Mach 5 played on the theme song
"Mach-a-go-go" or "Go speed Racer" b/c "go" in Japanese means "5".
So making a Mach 6 essentially obliterated that clever play on words. :\

buuuuuuuuuuuut...I'll probably end up watching it at some point anyways..

As far as KICK-ASS goes (or is it "ASS-KICK"? ) I absolutely adored it.
However, I decided that it was the first R-rated movie I was going to take Jordie to see...
and well....there was a lot more sexuality in it than I had previously come to understand..
I'm sure she's seen much worse, it was just the whole sitting there watching it with her
and wondering "should I cover her eyes? no, no..she's old enough...but....should I?" thing..
Still getting used to the idea that she's a teenager... :dizzy:

I LOVED hit-girl. love love love love love..
I haven't read the comic, of which I feel ashamed...
but now I want to sooooooo badly. I think that was the best role I've ever seen Nicolas Cage play. ever.
Also, I REALLY want to watch that movie that had a trailer before KICK-ASS, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"
http://www.youtube.com/v/WtKAfoIllbo
Apparently that baby's based off a manga-esque comic series http://www.scottpilgrim.com/
I think it looks ten-thousand kinds of awesome and fun. I also really like Michael Cera's acting...
he's super funny and adorable in that wonderfully awkward-introvert sort of way.. :)

Iron Man 2 was pretty good...I enjoyed it. laughed a lot..enjoyed the effects..
(My favorite effect bits are his computer displays and how he interacts with them...)
I must admit that I remember enjoying the first one more, I think..
but I believe it may have been the initial realization that I thought Robert Downy jr. was smoking hot :);;
but yea, perhaps I also enjoyed the first one b/c there were a lot more variety of emotions that it inspired,
whereas the second one mainly focused on humor...I was disappointed that
they cut one of the scenes out of the movie that was in the trailer, as well...
Playing up on Tony and Pepper's relationship a bit more could have made the movie a lot better..
The end fight with Whiplash was a little quick, as well..and I was kinda "meh" about the bit after the credits...
Then again, I'm not a big fan of that particular subject..so yea...

Oh...not sure if I ever said this, but if you haven't seen Sherlock Holmes yet, go watch it right now.
Go on, I'll wait.

*edit* Sorry for the wall of text, guys...

Thing about Kick-Ass is, it's more than just entertainment. Might even be a relatively *good* choice for a young teen's first 'R' movie - it's got a very valuable message.

"With no power comes no responsibility..... only that's not true."

"Three guys ganging up on one guy and everybody else is standing around filming it? Damn right I'd rather die."

It's the kind of thing that definitely takes some thought to sort out, but it's *good* to think about those things as you're approaching adulthood. We might actually live in a somewhat better world if more people were exposed to this kind of stuff while growing up.

I sort of think that the red-line trailer may have actually been a bad idea in retrospect. A little girl using vulgar language and shooting people gives most folks an immediate idea of what the movie's about, but in this case the idea's totally wrong. She talks and acts the way she does because she's been raised with an intense focus on making justice happen, rather than (like most people) not 'rocking the boat'. It's totally appropriate for the character, but you have to get to know the character to understand that.

Anyway, I think it deserves a spot in the "great" films category (as in, 'not just "good"'). It's a shame there's no real chance it'll even be considered for awards like best picture or anything like that.

---

I *loved* the Iron Man 2 as well; in some ways more than the first, in others falling a little short. I commented about that one right after seeing the midnight opening (first in this town since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) over in the Alone In A Crowd movies thread (look for the one dated 'May 7, 2:52 am'). Tom was pretty eager for that one, so we had a bit of 'build-up' ;-) ....

---

I'm also seriously looking forward to Scott Pilgrim, especially since I found out the director is Edgar Wright (as in Shaun Of The Dead Edgar Wright). While watching the trailer online I happened to pause it at just the moment Scott's fist connected with one of the evil exes, and there was actually a frame of solid black-and-white silhouettes of the characters and a big starburst shape around the impact point. That one frame decided it for me! :D

I'm definitely going to see Scott Pilgrim when it comes out. I can't wait to see how the fights are.

rented THE LOVELY BONES.
it was pretty good. the acting really was terrific, but it had one of those endings... i dunno how to describe except it was similar to American Beauty... it was kind of sad, but a good sort of sad.

you are lucky to be able to rent. almost every rental place in my town seems to be shutting down except for one independent shop. all that's left is Redbox and those stupid Blockbuster Redbox knock off machines. is this a sign of things to come?

actually, by "rented" i meant "got from netflix".
the video rental place in my town is going out of business at present. i bought a very lightly used 2-disc edition of TIME BANDITS for $7. score!!

its the same for me. Movie Gallery is going out of business and i ended up scoring a few good foreign flicks in the process despite how over priced their stuff is.

its kind of sad that my family is now going to switch to netflix because we "have to". it beats the hell out of redbox; especially considering my mom's terrible track record when it comes to returning movies. and yet she still does redbox. ugh

I would *so* love to finish converting my Gilliam collection to DVD; I had them *all* on VHS, back when there *was* VHS.

Previously-viewed ex-rentals are one of my favorite ways to get DVDs tho. I picked up 2112, Inglourious Basterds, Sherlock Holmes, Zombieland, District 9, & one other I forget, for $9 each yesterday.

I ended up buying El Mariachi, Kung Fu Hustle, Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior, and recently District B-13; not to be confused with the more successful District 13. B-13 is a french movie that rivals The Transporter when it comes to balls to the wall action. Very worth watching, though both the dub and the subtitles go by very quickly due to all the fast talking.

I've got a thing for foreign films. I also recently watched a ridiculous movie called El Vacilon with my folks. Its actually pretty funny; but good lord, the two radio DJs that starred in the movie are borderline sadistic with the prank calls they pull on random people.

it wasn't historically accurate, save for 3 or 4 key dillinger moments. i'm a fan of true crime, so i hate it when it gets so horrifically bastardized.
