The All-Consuming Webcomics Thread

Postby J. Maxwell » Sat Oct 07, 2006 12:26 pm

Because there needs to be one of these in every forum ever made.

Basically, a place to plug anything you may read on a regular or irregular basis. I'll start with my personal favorites:

SAM AND FUZZY
The absolute best webcomic I've ever read. Apart from being terrific with his artwork, Sam is an absolute master of plot. He is the sultan of suspense and the king of cliffhangers. Just a few weeks ago, he finished a story arc that has been going on for nine months by ending it with three consecutive cliffhangers. Then cut to two weeks of backstory. And I loved every minute of it. He can somehow make a serious compelling story composed of characters you care about like a sibling using only the following components:
*A 2.5' talking bear
*A guy who looks suspiciously like Sonic the Hedgehog
*A radio DJ
*A Johnen Vasquez parody
*A panda with a skull for a head
*A kitten that looks like a dinosaur
*Ninja Mafiosos (Other ranks of the Ninja Mafia: General, Emporer, Stripper, Table)

DR. McNINJA
It's about a ninja who is also a doctor. And Scottish, apparently. Apart from having some really gorgeous artwork, Dr. Mcninja is one of the few works I've seen that sucessfully pulls off both a DKR Batman-like seriousness and an Adam West Batman-like cheeziness. It's absolutely hilarious, but you need to thouroughly suspend your disbelief before reading it. And learn to just have fun watching a Ninja dressed as a doctor fight a man with an organic jetpack with the aid of banditos riding velociraptors.

A DIVINE DRAMEDY
Jim Tierney wrote: defenestration: noun. (formal or humorous) the action of throwing someone or something out of a window.
ORIGIN early 17th cent.: from modern Latin defenestratio(n-), from de- 'down from' + Latin fenestra 'window.'

You can sort of see how ADD was gojng to be all dark and morbid in the first few strips, and then Jim was all like "wait what now" and turned it into a black comedy. For the better, I might add. Jim also writes the sporadically-updated...
[plethera.freehostia.com]
PLETHERA
...Which is about something completely different and random every time it's updated. It's one of the few "random humour" comics that I really enjoy. The archives shouldn't take more than three minutes, so take a look.

MEN IN HATS
Mean-spirited, sarcastic, and effectively dead. Men in Hats hasn't updated in a year, but it was hilarious while it lasted. Somehow, this guy managed to make six stereotypical characters against a total of three backgrounds one of the most diverse and interesting comics out there.

KITTY-BOT
Best-known for being run by a terrific lady named Claire who is both Sam "Sam and Fuzzy" Logan's girlfriend and had to change her alias because pornstar "Alteka" took it. Apart from being a really good science blog, the comic is about kitties, robots, and various combinations of the two. And like all great Sci-Fi (See also: Joss Whedon's Firefly), the science and history behind it kind of makes sense. And if it turns out that I have no idea what I'm talking about in terms of sciencey stuff and it in fact turns out to be complete bullshit, at least it's interesting. I also love the sheer amount of effort Claire puts into her work. The comic looked fantastic before, and just now she went back and REDID THE ENTIRE ARCHIVE to make it look even better (And more in line with the current style). Now that's dedication.

I agree, any webcomic list that excludes PBF isn't much of a webcomic list at all, is it?

Also, Dinosaur Comics.

I figure everyone has PBF bookmarked anyway. ;) Such a great black humour strip.

Dinosaur Comics I enjoy, but haven't thoroughly read. It's one of those things I keep meaning to do, but just haven't.

I don't know how many of you already read this, but it's fantastic. :D

The art is what really gets me, but it's pretty funny too, in a Seinfeld sort of comic-about-nothing way.

I think if there is one comic on the internet that deserves respect for never sucking and updating all the freaking time it's Scary Go Round

And Nine Planets Without Intelligent Life is just very good.

Also Perfect Stars and Letters to a Wild Boar are both incredible "celebrations of futility".

One panel comics about the hero, Butch R. Mann. A comiv 'version' of Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. The artist has been doing it in spurts laletly due to lack of time and running out of jokes, but it's still a pretty good series.

Davan, and his random mix of friends, take on the world (and its lack of intelligent life). This comic hits on many points from love and hate, to life and death, and all the glories in between.

You can't have Penny Arcade without PvP. Just like PA, this is a gamers comic that hits on everything. And for you World of Warcraft players out there, Scott Kurts has the anti-PA guild on Iron Forge server for us Horde-loving members.

Well, lets see...
On the popular front we have:

Megatokyo of course,
Apple Geeks
8 Bit Theater
Grim Tales and the rest of the snafu comics.

And a less well know comic:
Brink Loves me some insanity.

Always on the look out for more ways to kill time though. Loving this thread lots.

Here's a partial list of my bookmarks... mind, some of these sites I haven't had the chance to visit in a while (like a year), so some of them may have gone on hiatus. Many of the weekly links are comics that are updated irregularly.

I love CB, but I never seem to have any time toread it. When my modem stops going all wonky, remind me to finish the archives.

That one's locally-produced, actually. I don't believe BNS is based in my city, per se, but I think it's probably the only webcomic to come from this province, and I know the author did a talk at the college here not long ago. I might have gone, if I had known about it at the time.
