Marble Hornets

Postby AMK » Fri Oct 23, 2009 5:01 pm

So, I found something interesting.

A YouTube video series. Very interesting.

Your reactions could vary between:
"AMK, WHY did you show me this?"
to
"AMK, whhhyyyyyy did you you show me thissss????"

So! Watch these things (16 entries so far plus this intro), and be intrigued.

Before I continue, is this real AMK? Or some weird metaproject? It's really strange.

From what I have gleamed from human mating rituals, this series of videos is (in black, so that people who haven't seen it aren't spoiled):

Part of an ARG (Alternate Reality Gaming). The whole series and a corresponding series of video responses (totheark) are some sort of puzzle for ARG players. I prefer to just enjoy it as a series of creepy, creepy videos.

Curious and more Curious...
Unicorns are real. They all just got fat, grey and lazy. So we call them Rhinoceroses.

yanno i had found references to "slender man" popping up here n there and i had wondered if it started as a meme or as this youtube series.

i hadn't actually WATCHED the youtube shorts until this week. they are pretty interesting. very... Blair-Witchy. and it's a "where's waldo" for the spooky set! so pretty fun on that aspect. (entry 2 and entry 5 (location scouting) i don't see him... is he not there or did i miss it?)
HOWEVER i will say (without saying TOO much) that entry 18 and 19 totally took me out of it with that one guy. all of the previous entries did a good job of maintaining a certain mystery with their creepy mood, but this... guy? uh no. i don't buy it. at least not yet. maybe they can sell me on the idea in later entries.
oh and i really dig how they are maintaining the whole realism aspect with the video responses and twitter accounts!

...Because We still know how to speak it probably? We call it the QUEEN's English for a reason. It's basically us saying "This is the real thing. Bugger off." Plus I'm not Alice ;)

INDEED. I find the whole totheark aspect of the series somewhat self indulgent. Before Entry #18, the videos could have stood alone as a series, and the totheark videos could have merely provided puzzle content (binary clocks, Morse code messages, etc.) for those more into the ARG aspect.

NONETHELESS, I have been a huge fan of Slender Man ever since. I've decided that next Halloween I shall dress as him as best as I can. Observe my design concept:

Relenz is somewhat correct. Slender Man, the STAR of the series, as an entity was originally conceived by a forum member of Something Awful, described loosely in one post. This was in like, June of this year. Then yes, someone decided to make a series starring our slender friend. Success!

If you manage this feat, I demand evidence. Then next year, SOME ONE MUST UP IT!

I can think of some 11th-century poets who'd disagree with that.....

"Queen's English" is probably the single most deviant of all English dialects, historically speaking. And precedent is the only "legitimacy" after all ;)

But actually, that happens with all languages: they get bastardized the most wherever the "cultural center" is. In 100 years, American'll prolly be worse, at least if we bother trying to keep it "unified". The purest strains of English are spoken in villages like the one in "Hot Fuzz", or possibly the Appalacians. (Australia'd be a candidate too, but they mostly came from London anyway.)

I win by default then? They won't turn up to the debate. ;)

I hesitate to actually confirm if you are right or not as a small village in England is more likely to speak with a local dialogue, accent and slang. The true form of Queen's English is most likely going to be used by the higher up and officials.

Where on earth did you get that information? And as for speaking Queen's English, I'm pretty sure they've got their own version as well, much like America.

B.A. in linguistics, focusing mainly in North-West Germanic languages. I can *speak* Old English. It's still got some of the best poetry in the whole Englishy conglomeration.

It's also been suggested by more than one other person that I may be the reincarnation of J.R.R. Tolkein, but that's a separate issue really. ;)

"Curious and more curious", as I thought would be obvious, is not incorrect.

I thought it was interesting, but I couldn't stick with Marble Hornets for very long. I'm wondering about this slender man business.
