yeah those tend to be some of the best comics i see, i can't believe i forgot about them.
at the convention i went to i think that most creative/crazy/bizarre/genius person that was there was this guy with this self published comic called "geeen" he was the best and he drew me a pic of a strutting banana, he kinda looks like a ladies-man banana
oh yeh self published/small press guys are THE BEST at conventions! they give you LOADS of stuff for free and always have the time to talk to you about their projects/autograph stuff/make you cool sketches! most of them are just so appreciative to have people GET their stuff. i ALWAYS support them in any way i can, especially if their cool at the con. most of them are so excited to actually sell something that they flag me down the next day and beg for criticism and critiques!
