21 April, 2004: numba freeeeee!

Postby essrose » Wed Apr 21, 2004 5:40 am

Hi all.

From the latest update:

"Gee whiz, another month has come and gone. I guess it's true that the years tick on by at warp speed when you're busy... I guess if i wanted life to last longer i'd just sit and suck the electronic teat all day, but then, what kind of life is that? (answer: "teaty")

ITEM: ISSUE NUMBER THREE is somehow available already! That's right, three months have elapsed since the last one, which boggles my mind like you wouldn't believe. We learn lots more about witches and witching-craft in this one, including the identities of the other four Yanks (among other things). Also: MORE ECTO-PONY FUN! How can you say no? Go bludgeon your local comic book guy until he gives you one THIS MINUTE.

(Tell that jerk to reorder the first two issues, while you're at it. He never seems to replace ANYthing, that guy...)

ITEM: FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is July 3! Don't know what that entails? Well, it's this really sweet promotion wherein you wander into any nearby comic shop and they give you free special edition comics by some of your favorite publishers, many of them with original material! Last year's event was a resounding success (i guess), and this year's will be even better (i'm imagining). I've done a two-page serenity story for SLG's offering (which will also have something new by the mad genius Jamie Smart as well. BOSH!) and i very much want you to see it, 'cause i like it. And it's FREE, for chrissakes! You like free.

ITEM: Speaking of SLG stuff... The first collection of Serena Valentino and fsc's wonderfully unsettling series Nightmares & Fairytales is now available for purchase, and if you don't already have it, i hate you. I think it's probably the prettiest package SLG's put out to date, and i can't imagine a more deserving work... Fsc is one of the most underrated artists around (honestly, the fact that she doesn't get more attention is proof positive this whole industry is a festering sore), and this collection of eerie little tales is some of her prettiest work. Buy it now!

And since i'm in a ravey (as in "enthusiastic," not "glowstick") mood... If you like gloomy-type spookystuff with a positive message (as i do) you might check out The Ghouly Boys , too. It made me smile, it did.

ITEM: Kill BIll Vol. 2 also made me smile. I know a lot of people really passionately despise Quentin Tarantino, but i just love the bastard all to pieces... It's just really cool to see someone embracing his influences and celebrating them, instead of pretending he has none. So many artists want you to believe they developed their style in a vaccuum, and i really don't understand why... To me, style is all about picking and choosing and blending together bits and pieces of everything you're exposed to, and it's in that mashing and regurgitating that we come up with a fresh and original ideas. The trick is to expose yourself to as wide a variety of sources as you can for the most interesting contrasts. Mr. Tarantino understands that, and isn't all self-conscious about letting his passions show. And that's why Kill Bill is brilliant.

And finally: What was with that one freakish edit in Hellboy? Jiminy Crickets, people thought there was a reel missing, for god's sake..."

later, skaters,

Query

Postby Relenz » Wed Apr 21, 2004 9:59 am

"Callooh, callay. I chortle."
15 points for getting both origins of this qoute.

It is wonderful news, indeed, to hear of this third issue's publishing.

As one who has no immediate access to comic book stores, how will I get a copy of this delightful-sounding two-paged story?

Ahhh, ummm.... *wracks brains*

Lewis Caroll? *shrug*

My god. Issue three is so prettyfull, it makes my chest ache. Although I did have to bludgeon my local comicbook guy to go get it out of the back room and actually stock it. Grrr.

Hey, good question about the freebie -- can you order it through Diamond or Previews or somebody? I thought I heard wind of people talking about these things last year. If all else fails, you could probably get one of us to pick one up for you and mail it your way, Relenz.

Wah! What about us poor folks in England? Don't we deserve free SLG goodness too? I know 3rd July is still a way off, but if some kind soul would see their way to pilfering a copy for me, I'd be eternally grateful ( + pay all of the shipping of course ).

Also, how comes issue 3 isn't available from the SLG webstore yet? They need to get their monkeyman asses in gear.

Woo, I'm coming across all whiney-whiney newbie. Not good... especially with my newly found prediliction towards starting paragraphs with meaningless words : Wah? Woo? Damned if I know what I'm on about.

(I'll shut-up now)

Yes! Do it now! It will fill you with much joy.

(or, alternatively, there's always www.slavelabor.com... once they get it updated, of course)

I'd also like to comment on how the ink fumes from this issue knocked me flat on my ass when I opened it. My advice -- do not read your brand new Serenity Rose #3 in a sealed parked car. Attempt to contain your glee until you can find a well ventilated area.

You kid'n?
The inky smell is the best part of ANY comic. To quote Guiles "Information should be smelly."

No, no. This was like... a CLOUD of noxious fumes. It made me cough.

Believe me, I'm a big fan of that fresh ink smell -- first thing I do with a new book is crack it open and sniff it (<---weirdo). But this was just fucking ridiculous.

Maybe we can just chalk this up to part of the Serenity Rose experience -- "now with Olfactory Assault technology!"

*sigh*

This calls for a trip downtown (Ugh). I guess that now i can't say I'm broke as a silly excuse for not buying it and reading it online instead.

At least the owner of the comic book store i go to is my friend's father, so he'll prolly give me a discount like he gave me on Squee (I hope). :D

Advantages to working in comic stores are many, but not least of all is getting hold of Numbah Tree, 2 days early.

Was much of awesomeness.

Now where ish' #4?

Should be out 'round about San Diego ComicCon time (July?), if I'm not mistaken.

Cheerage, ish three is available in the SLG webstore. Unfortunatly lacking in an 'instantaneous transportation' shipping option though. Guess I'll have to wait a few days for it to turn up. Sigh...

I turned up at the local comic book store at Canterbury, but according to them #3 wasn't in this week's imports. Stupid putting-things-on-the-market-a-week-early shenanigans, now I can't have it till Friday!

*squeals* I heart it! I boughted it. It made me happy. That sort of distracted happy you get when something is boughten. Teehee, "boughten" isn't a real word. I need sleep. This series makes me excited. It puts joy into my life. Yay! No, this isn't the sleepiness talking. Don't be silly. ;p

They had it right on the rack for me. Damn, they have a nice rack.
