:D yay. there are people what actually speak to newcomers in hyar.
my long quest of doom, despair, and desolation seems to be.....being.....fulfilled. <.<;

as for who I am;

I am a lowly aspiring comic- artist from Kentucky, U.S. of A.

I graduated from Morehead State University last year and have been drifting along
life's gloriously foul smelling sewers ever since.
hahaha...oh man...
just call me miss dramatic. :\

however, since my college didn't have a sequential art program and I really didn't discover what it was I truly wanted to do with art until my last semester......yea....I'm a little inexperienced in what it means to be a comic artist.
It also doesn't help that Ky is a crappy place to try to be an artist....

Essentially, I'm 23...trying to get my life together so's I can make comics about the silly stuff that floats about in this noggin of mine.

anyone else on this board into the arts?

oh yes, most definitely! i'd say it's what? half of the members here are into one form of doodle-age or another. ^^ i have an art thread, as well as subob, rynan, and some others, (who i cant remember right now >.>' )too.
i myself never went ot proper art school, but kind of always wanted to in the back of my brain. did you actually learn good stuff? i've heard some art teachers try to "force" certain techniques and practices on their students sometimes.... horror stories.

I'm way into the arts :D

And Will, you don't need to go to art school to be an artist. It just helps immensely. The only art teacher like the ones you describe was actually trying to do a good deed in hindsight - he "cured" his students of the whole anime thing - but I kinda...resented that at the time and skipped his classes. A lot. *Failsatlife* >_>;;

I never had any professors that would try to force their way onto their students...in my opinion (which is the same as my former professors) it's up to the teacher to teach in such a way as to allow the student to have free expression, whilst guiding them toward a more skillful manner of doing so..........
not obliterating their interests altogether! :eek:

There was one teacher that I heard horror stories about (like him gettin mad and destroying someones work) :eek: and saw what his students produced as a result of his crappy teaching method.......everyones work looked the same.......and very much like crap. I said "screw that" and refused to take him. Made out my schedule each semester to where I avoided him at all costs.
aaaaaaaaaand.........I had some very awesome teachers b/c of it.
I <3 my mentors

I miss school sooooooo much.

and Candy, anime is an art.....so instead of "curing" the students (rolls eyes) they should have had them do a whole bunches of research aboot it and practice doing anatomy studies which helps you when you are wanting to stylize the human form. -having to put hard work and dedication into something also helps weed out the ppl that are just doing something b/c its popular or b/c they think it's easier..-

take this, for example:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v39/S ... taru3a.jpg
looks like art to me :tooth:

but just like any other art style...

it takes a lots of practice to get good at it.

wow.....I wrote a lot. :???:
sorry aboot the ranting -_-;;

I know, I know, but anime was bad for me - I stylized things too much without using references or studying much anatomy, and it all ended up looking terrible. I'd post an example, but I burned it all. Not because it turned out bad, really...more 'cause I lived on a farm at the time (thank Someone that year is over), and I had a small room and a big fire pit...^^;

This teacher's methods were good other than his utter hatred of anime (he was open to other styles of cartooning, but all in-class assignments required realism to get a decent grade, and he most definitely wasn't the type to just destroy someone's work - in fact, he encouraged the kids to keep drawings even if they absolutely loathed them, and grimaced every time he saw one in the trash can. Even pulled some outta' there and gave them good grades just to make a point sometimes). I did learn a lot from him, when I showed up and paid attention (which was rare), and he was one of those teachers that genuinely cared about his students.

The most important thing I learned, though, was that even if you hate the teacher, it's better to either figure that out early on and drop the course, or if it's too late to do that, just go by their method and stick it out 'til next semester.

And since I'll be in college when I return to school and will likely be required to take certain courses and not drop them, I'll probably have to do the latter. :|
