Lets bloody well do something!

i've heard there's a lot of artists out there besides me. tell us about some of the keenest ones. (special note: the first person to mention jhonen gets punched in the crotch)

fanks, i like doing braided rope & stuff like that.....i'm working on doing snarly cables like Aaron and Jhonen do (especially Aaron's), i love the "patterned" look but haven't gotten good at it yet.

don't count me out of the steam punk challenge yet!

Image

yes, this is the rough pencil version. i've already inked it and made many changes, but one of my markers decided to start running dry and spooged all over it in places so digital clean up is going to be a bitch.

i thought in the steam punk version V would conjure butterflies using a scientific device rather than magic. at first i toyed with dressing her in coattails, but then decided she might look good more betterer dressed like a lady in a long dress.

coloured version to come but might be a while....

looks like V's gonna party like it's 1899 ;)

i'm still blank on this one, but inspiration tends to come when least expected.....

it only took a month, but here it is!

Image

yeah, ink clean up WAS a bitch. as well as making that organ grinder thing look passable. i know, perspective and i are mortal enemies, okay? i coloured V's hair using a layer, so i'm proud of that, at least. i kept going back and forth on what colour the dress ought to be. started and stopped many times before settling on the purple.

thoughts?

very kewl.... and congrats on being first to bust this challenging topic!

everyfink looks right keen to me, would'n'a even questioned the perspective if you had'n'a brought it up.... and welcome to the land of layers, i sometimes use *dozens* of them on a pic.... they're fun!

nice gears too :D

Very spiffy. Nice job on the coloring as well, Will.

and here's the very VERY rough draft for mine...

Image

I've got a lot of things to finish and fix- obviously..
her left arm is to big according to foreshortening (or her arm is to small),
the gears look terrible,
the pipes need more work,
the squid in the front need to be bigger to be accurate to perspective..
the whole thing in general needs a lot of work...
and maybe some color and a lot of photoshoop. :)

but hopefully once it is finished (whenever that'll be)
it will look at least semi- presentable :?

(the squids is gonna be glowy with ectoplasm lightbulbs) :tooth: maybe the steam too... :???:

*I have no idea what my apparent obsession with squid/ octopi is all about.. :o

Sera's expression is priceless! & i love all the little vacuum tubes. this pic reminds me big time of Agatha in GirlGenius, building her swarms of tiny li'l clanks....

the leaky steam pipe is a nice touch. seems perfectly reasonable that Sera would be completely oblivious to it :D

btw, what are those things on her back? i'm thinking like folding wings or something....

wow, thanks ^.^
i spose my gears look okay because
1. they are very small and you can't see how uneven they are
2. you take into account that the perspective makes no sense whatsoever

i almost didn't even make them into gears. i very nearly kept it as wheels because i was nervous about making gears and didnt know if they'd look even remotely good. what d'ya know?
it is very easy to make those gears in Adobe Photoshop 7. they are basically a series of differently coloured cocentric circles. then i zoomed in real close and made a series of straight lines to "chisel out" the teeth.

SQUEEK: with some light touch ups, that sera and vacuum tube squid pic could very well be one of the greatest things ever drawn. i love love love how you drew her hands!!

oh boy! i finally have a preliminary ruff-comp to show off!

Image

sorry if you have to strain a little to make it out - it's a very rough composite! all this was done last night after my bedtime.

i'm doing a rather experimental thing with some stock photos and some more that a guy on dA said i could use, finished off with drawn stuff that i'll try to get nice and slick like my Mimi pic. What's drawn here is just prelim sketch-stuff to get the idea kind of plotted out. and yes, that is Tess' car faintly visible under the sketches ;)

it's moving quick now that i've got something solid down, the final might even be up within a week!

and yes, Will, it's mostly done with layers ;) they're fun!

'nuther update: here's a penciled layer traced over the existing photocomposite; i'm going to use it to add detail to the main image.

Image

i'm rather pleased with the overalls, personally :D
