Animations

Postby williamthebloody » Thu Aug 06, 2009 3:47 pm

i like animations. i know that many people on here are artists, go to school for art or have toyed with animations of their own. this thread is going to be a catch all for either video links to animations or general talks about animation stuff. stop motion, computer made, hand drawn flip books, whatever, dude!

i'm going to start things off with a 6 minute youtube link. this fellow "got revenge" on all of the yellow sticky note to-do lists in his life with this film. he used about 2300 stick notes to summarize 9 years of his life as ruled by stickies:

http://www.youtube.com/v/7IeSqVbo ... re=related

and the filmmakers comments here:

i thot it was kewl. some bits for you animation students to giggle at.

Great post, Will!
That's a great example of an art style I wouldn't like as a static drawing, but love to see it how he animates it. Especially in that raw, sketchy style.

Hen, His Wife is now one of the most insane things i have EVER seen, and i've seen Eraserhead, Buckaroo Bonzai and this cartoon:

http://www.youtube.com/v/dOptGLEOsJ8

i saw this cartoon for the first time on MTV's "Liquid Television" ages ago and i never thought i'd see it again. good to know youtube actually does serve a practical purpose now and again. (featuring music by danny elfman!)

but yanno, this is why i like animations. you can really do insane and brilliant things all at the same time.

I don't have a link to it, but there was an animated short on Shockwave.com called "Rockfish" that I thought was simply amazing.

Well I'm studing stop-motion animation in what I think is the only school that can teach it over here. Everything else has gone to 3D animation. It's a pretty simpel school and you only study there for 2 years. But I love the movies that are made there, and the first year has really been awesome.

Heres a few clipps from older students:

Slinker, those are excellent! I LOVE the music and sound in most of those. The one claymation with the guy sitting in his bed and in the background it's either someone blowing on different sized straws, or bottles, but it was perfect.
Those are clips of longer things, right? Since it just fades out.

One of those looked like an actual movie I might find a a video store, the one by Jonas Jakobsson.

Some of my absolute favorite stuff (stuff as in stuff) right now is being put out by a group of two or three people putting stuff out under "Molumbus".
The animation is very minimal, and their backgrounds are mostly photos put through a photoshop filter - but all the timing and everything is perfect, and it's humor is right up m'alley.

The newest:
http://www.youtube.com/v/GfHNgv4sgYE

I think it's pretty unique, instead of making cartoons that are carried by animation, they make cartoons that are carried by their voice work and script. I wouldn't be surprised if they do all the dialogue for it before doing any animation. When there is dialogue...

A lot of the stuff they do spoofs what seems to me are 80s cartoon cliches, but every now and then they just go off and do their own thing.

Yeah, the school is about 2 years long. And the second year is focus on making your own movie of free choosen animation. And the school then supports you with all the possibles way to finish it. So must of the movies there is made by students during that. But some of the stuff you do in the first year is also ends up to a few seconds long movie. So it's not entirly focus on just animating stuff. It's very focus on letting us doing something creative with it... Or at least try. :D

This thread is utterly fantastic!!

That Russian animation reminds me of R. Crumb.

Here's are some films from Gobelins; I dream of someday doing a graduate program there.

If we speak of Russian animators we should never forget Yuri Norshtein. Probably the best cut-out animator ever existed! :)

Be warned. This movie may cause instant depression.

the student pencil animations of one Aimee Major, Cal Arts graduate. her dream was to animate for Disney but the year she graduated they massacred their traditional animation staff.

"Waterfall" chosen to be in the 1999 Calarts producers show

Oh wow, I haven't heard that name in a long time. It's been forever since I saw those. I knew Major as a popular Furry artist (enough, enough) on Yerf way back when. Love her stuff.

Nd I loved Paper Airplanes and the Norshtein videos! Thanks for them!! XD
