well, i looked at the admin panel, and after much toodling around, i found under "configuration" the only mention of SMTP, but i dont think it's what i want. the check box i look at is in reference to e-mail so i dont think that is right. however, i do notice that this forum is a different version than the one the fellow asking the question had. he was using 2.0.23 and we use 2.0.21 which may explain it. i could be wrong, and i may be looking at the right button to press, but this isnt my forum so i'm hesitant to go around clicking on things back there. i mean, i could turn this place lime green and turn on profanity filters if i wanted. i could also delete anyone as a user up to and including Mr A if i hand a mind to. but i dont. coz i'm relatively trustworthy. i'm just really really dumb when it comes to computer stuffs so i think i'm going to unwittingly launch Russia's nuclear missiles at any moment.

on a sort of unrelated note.... sometime in the last 10 days-ish i stopped getting e-mail notifications which i used to get when new posts were made to topics i liked. now i get no e-mails at all, not even when new users sign up, which is weird. i checked my profile and all the selection i made are unchanged. any one else notice this or maybe it's my e-mail provider?

I don't think there are much diffrents between those 2 versions of the forums. When the numbers are that low it's usally small minor changes often unnoticable.

And on your second post, nope it's related to the problem. The SMTP is what makes the forum send e-mails automaticly to all people with their email registrerd here. And the one on this forum has obviously stop working. So I would say it's safe to turn it of so we don't get the errors. But I understand it is scary to touch when you don't know much about the stuff. Perhaps report to Aaron or something? It's his forum afterall. And he does have a responsiblity over his children. :)

How to fix the SMTP thing is beyond me. Heres additonal info from phpBB's faqs:

# I keep getting Mail sending errors when I (or my users) post/send PM's/etc.!

This error will occur if phpBB cannot send mail. phpBB can send email two ways; using the PHP mail() function or directly via SMTP. Some hosting providers limit the mail() function to prevent its use in spamming, others may rename it or limit its functionality. In either case you may need to make use of SMTP. This requires that you have access to such a facility, e.g. your hosting provider may provide one (perhaps requiring specific written authorisation), etc. Note that if your provider requires authorisation we only support the simple AUTH method using plaintext username/password. We do not support secure sockets layer (SSL), POP3 send or any other method. Please see http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/ for additional help on this matter.

If you do require SMTP services please do not ask (on our forums or elsewhere) for someone to provide you with one. Open relays are now things of the past thanks to the unthinking spammers out there. Therefore you are unlikely to find someone willing to offer you (free) services.

following slinker's sweet swedish reassurances, i clicked the SMTP "no" option. hopefully this will fix the problems we've been experiencing. if not, i can always go and click it back to "yes" if needed.
