I would like to say: Fuck you, BP, and your pathetic $20 billion pledge. If you won't willingly forfeit the ENTIRE COMPANY to pay for this, then you should at the very least say goodbye to all your assets in the U.S., Mexico, and every other country bordering on the Gulf. (I'm honestly surprised Canada hasn't confiscated their share already.)

And come to think of it, that Gulf Stream flows straight to Europe, doesn't it? Looks like what goes around comes around after all. Everybody gets screwed, nice and fair that way.

Death Penalty for corporations. It's the only way.

p.s. Damn! My condolences, Slinker. Believe me, after sharing my initials with the President for 8 years, I know the meaning of shame too!

p.p.s. Yes, I'm a bitter son of a bitch. I know this because my Mom told me so.

Hehe, I know the whole thing sucks big time Alphy, but you should seriously redirect your anger. Sine europian countries has nothing to do with it. And I dont think the oil can get here. Never heard anyone said that. (Which would be a big deal here) It's probably too heavy. It will probably just kill a bunch of fish at the botton.

Oh, I don't mean to throw blame anywhere in particular; it's not as if there isn't plenty to go around anyway.

& BTW, don't forget that oil is *lighter* than water, even if it's "heavy crude".

On a somewhat lighter note, I did much enjoy this li'l cartoon-thingy....

Oh yeah, the Nigerian oil business makes the U.S. version look like happy hippie playtime or something....

I just wish we'd hurry up & run out of the shit.

BTW, as the cheif executive (the executive branch is officially in charge of "enforcement" according to the Constitution), is there any conceivable reason why it is not President Obama's duty to directly order the Department of Commerce to freeze all BP assets in the country (to be only released with official approval) until such time as the damage they've caused has been rectified and the costs thereof subtracted?

It seems like dereliction of duty to me. Obama built his career on negotiation skill, but there's a time for that and this ain't it. He won one of the most decisive elections in American history due mainly to disgust over his oil-snake predecessor; if ever the term "mandate" really was applicable in government, this is the moment.

An oil *company* can't act responsibly, because a corporate charter says nothing about ethics or responsibility; the bottom line is the *only* thing that matters. They *are* responsible of course, but they're literally incapable of doing the right thing on their own. They have to be forced, with actual force.

I was very pleased today to learn that our good friend Jimmy Misanthrope's homeland seems to have the situation more-or-less figured out! What on Earth would we do without New Zealand?

I could have sworn the title was a euphemism and on the subject of what would we do without New Zealand... Well, if it didn't exist, I wouldn't exist.

So it seems like they have stopped the leak. (They are still not a 100% sure. So more testing was still going on.) About freaking time.

One thing I would like to bring up is however that it seems like a lot of people spend a lot of time blaming BP and Obama for it on the news. But it's almost silent about how depended USA are about oil. I mean when one country takes about 20-30% of all oil in the world I would guess things like this will happen now and then no matter how safe they build the oil rigs. (Sooner or later there will always be someone who makes a mistake.) And it doesn't even have to be from the oil rigs. There is plenty of other options to make a similar disaster.

But the oil is such a incredible big deal over at usa. It seems like mentioning the need to decrease the oil consumption is a political suicide. And I'm not saying that "we over here" is so much better on using environment friendly energy. But we seem to be a lot more aware of it, y'know?

It's all about chains of influence, Slinker.
Both the Democratic and Republican parties take donations from members of the Oil Industry at high levels. Neither party can afford to let the other become the dominant ally of the oil industry, as it would cost them elections. That, and the mass media has been creating a form of uneducated populist segment of society by making alternate energy seem like something that is too far off (like solar) or too dangerous (like nuclear fission). Through preying on a heavily sectionalist and "one size fits all" educational system, they have created all sorts of crazy misconceptions within the lower and lesser educated classes of the American public. One can even find evidence that Disney, for a period of time through a subsidiary record label), backed the ICP because of their anti intellectualism and proletariat based ideology. Even simple crime dramas are all infected with populist agendas, teaching it's viewers about the "subhuman" criminal class, and how they are undeserving of life itself. By creating and easily manipulated and terrified "volk", they can better sell a wide variety of political causes and products.
In short:
Get rid of 24 hour news and populism, save country.

also, the WORLD economy is pretty well BASED in/on oil. if oil were made irrelevant overnight by a miracle non-polluting replacement, then literally national economies would collapse. the world at large needs a slow, steady weening off of oil so that it doesn't implode economically.

but YES SLINKER, i completely agree that europe in general DOES seem a little more "aware" and active in its roll at finding energy substitutes. i remember seeing a segment in a film about "greener" energy that germany was a major pioneer in solar. also, many european countries seem to use not only smaller, more efficient automobiles, but the smart cars and such too. a lot of cites in europe have small roadways so smaller and smart cars just make more sense over there in that regard as well.
